Madagascar Reels After Two Young Women Found Dead Days After Cinema Visit

Two young women went to the cinema on Friday, August 21, and never came home. Haingotiana Rasamison, 17, and Stéphanie Noasoavina, 21, attended a screening at a shopping center in the suburbs of Antananarivo. Two days later, on Sunday, August 23, their bodies were found further north, setting off a wave of grief and alarm across Madagascar.

The killings have struck a country already gripped by anxiety over a pattern of abductions. For ordinary Malagasy families, the case has crystallized a fear that public spaces, even a suburban shopping center on a Friday evening, cannot be taken for granted as safe. The victims were allegedly bound, beaten severely, and assaulted with a knuckle duster.

Police announced the arrest of four suspects on charges of rape and murder. All four men reportedly confessed. Police Commissioner Joachim Randriamaro, head of the national police’s information and communication service, described the evidence as extensive. “Beyond their confessions, they filmed the crime and kept the video. It is now in the hands of investigators. In their vehicle, we also found the clothing, shoes, and hats they wore on the day of the crime. These items are still covered in blood, despite their attempts to clean them,” Randriamaro said.

Then came the reconstruction.

On Saturday, authorities brought the four suspects to Ambohimanga Rova to reenact the events. According to police, one of the men seized a firearm from a law enforcement officer. The other three allegedly used the ensuing confusion to attempt to flee. Officers opened fire. All four suspects were killed.

A Madagascar police official described the sequence plainly: “One of the suspects seized the weapon of a member of the forces of order. The three others then took the opportunity to attempt to escape. The forces of order were compelled to open fire.”

The deaths of the suspects have since opened a second, uncomfortable public debate. On social media, some users expressed satisfaction with the outcome. Others are asking harder questions, particularly how a man under active police supervision managed to obtain a weapon at all. That question cuts to the heart of what citizens can reasonably expect from law enforcement during high-risk operations.

Meanwhile, the broader security picture in Madagascar remains troubling. Families and communities have grown increasingly anxious about the safety of young people in public spaces, and this case has done little to ease that concern. The absence of a trial means the full circumstances of the crime, and of the reconstruction, may never be fully established in a court of record.
