Julien Marinozzi arrived at Château de Bel Ombre already convinced. His first visit to the southern Mauritius estate, with its layered architectural history and surrounding gardens, settled the question before any formal offer was made.
The property has appointed Marinozzi as its new General Manager, bringing more than 25 years of fine dining and luxury hospitality experience to a landmark long regarded as a cornerstone of the island’s hospitality landscape. For visitors and local diners alike, the appointment signals a renewed focus on culinary excellence and heritage preservation at one of Mauritius’s most storied addresses.

Marinozzi’s career began in 1999 in a one-star Michelin restaurant and Relais & Châteaux property in France. Over the following decades, he moved through one, two, and three-star Michelin kitchens, participated in the launches of several gastronomic restaurants, and took on progressively senior operational roles. An early move to Switzerland gave him his first international exposure. Then came London, where he spent six years directing multiple gastronomic venues. Within a year and a half of his arrival at one establishment, it earned a second Michelin star. He later joined Gordon Ramsay Restaurants as General Manager of one of the group’s flagship London locations.
After the Brexit transition, Marinozzi relocated to Réunion with his two sons, spending several years there before the offer from Château de Bel Ombre came through.
“Joining Château de Bel Ombre represents for me a return to my first loves: gastronomy, beautiful houses, and residences rich in history,” he said. That sentiment shapes his approach to the role. He prioritizes coaching teams, encouraging staff to take on greater responsibility while maintaining high standards, and holds firm views on ingredient quality, terroir, and authentic cooking methods as the foundations of genuine hospitality.
Raoul Maurel, Chief Operating Officer of Heritage Resorts & Golf, endorsed the appointment directly. Maurel cited Marinozzi’s capacity to share expertise across both kitchen and dining room teams as central to strengthening the estate’s operational excellence, and described him as someone equipped to honor the property’s timeless elegance and historical legacy.
Meanwhile, Marinozzi’s ambitions reach well past the dining room. His stated goal is to position Château de Bel Ombre as an essential gastronomic destination on the island, one that draws guests for the full experience rather than a single meal. A key part of that plan involves developing the estate’s gardens as a standalone attraction, weaving together gastronomic excellence, history, and cultural engagement into what he envisions as a complete day experience for visitors.
The appointment was reported by Le Mauricien (lemauricien.com), which noted that it reflects Heritage Resorts & Golf’s confidence in Marinozzi’s ability to raise the property’s standing within Mauritius’s broader hospitality sector.
Whether the gardens become the draw he imagines, and whether the estate claims the gastronomic reputation he is targeting, will be the measure of what this appointment ultimately delivers for the island’s visitors and dining public.
